Trail Map Instructions

ArcGIS Field Maps Instructions

  1. Always get permission to map a trail! Check to see if it crosses private land and ask permission. You can view land ownership by checking the Public Lands layer at the bottom of the layers list on the map.
  2. Before you draw a new trail please check the map to see if it already exists!
  3. Please practice if you are new before you create a real trail.

  4. Always let me know that you have created a new trail and if it is practice or complete so I can delete or publish it. Email me

Download & Install Collector for smart phones.
Go to https://www.esri.com/arcgis-blog/products/field-maps/field-mobility/migrate-to-arcgis-field-maps/ and choose the link your device and install it. There are instructions on the page and tutorials on how to use it.

Connect to Southeast Idaho Trail Map 

  1. Open Collector App on your device
  2. Sign in: (Please keep this info secret. Anyone with it can edit all maps and settings and damage our maps. Please don’t sign into the back end unless you are trained on ArcGIS.)

  3. You should see “Southeast Idaho Trail Map”. Tap it.
  4. The map will open and start trying to find your location. Give it some time to find you show the + sign in the bottom menu. If it does not show up then tap the menu on the right bottom menu and tap “Layers” and check the boxes next to layers with “Edit” or “Editable” in them. To return to the map tap the arrow in the top left corner.
  5. Tap the menu on the right bottom menu and tap “Basemap”. Choose “Imagery” or “Imagery with Labels” so that you can view your mapping progress and edit the map.  To return to the map tap the arrow in the top left corner.
  6. Tap on the + sign in the bottom menu. A list of trail types will appear such as Non Motorized, Trailhead, etc. Tap the one most closely matches your trail type.

Fill in Fields

  1. Trail Name: Enter Trail Name
  2. Seasonal: Specify “Summer, Spring, Fall” or “Winter Trail” etc.
  3. Allowed Use: Specify as “Foot trail only”, “Foot and Bike”, “Foot, Bike and Horse” etc.
  4. Difficulty: Specify Easy, Moderate or Difficult.
  5. Miles: Enter total mile length (ie. 1.2)
  6. Description: Enter a short description of the trail up to 300 characters.
  7. Organization: Enter the name of the best contact organization.
  8. Contact Phone: Enter organization phone number.
  9. Attachments: You can take a photo any time while recording your trail by tapping the paper clip icon. Please don’t take too many photos. We have 500 credits a year and a photo uses about 0.1 credits. We can buy blocks of 1000 more credits for $100.00.
  10. Tap the MAP ICON on the top menu to watch your progress on the map. You can zoom in or out.
  11. Tap the word “Stream” and start mapping the trail. You can tap “Pause” if you need to.
  12. When you complete mapping your trail tap the “Checkmark” icon in the top left menu.
  13. Edit your trail by tapping on the bottom corner arrow in the new box at the bottom and tap “Edit Feature”.
    a. Change text details.
    b. Tap the “Map” icon at the top of the window. You can now use your finger to drag the dots around the map. I can also edit the trail for you.
    c. Tap Delete the trail if it was for practice or you want to start over.
    d. Tap Copy if you want to create a similar trail.
    d. Tap DONE in the top left corner when you are finished editing the map. You may be able to edit the map later if needed.
    Everyone using the Collector account can edit any trail entered by another collector. Please do not edit any other trail.
    Only trained users can sign into the ArcGIS website and edit maps. If you want to learn to edit your maps on ArcGIS you can take online tutorials at http://doc.arcgis.com/en/arcgis-online/get-started/get-started.htm.
