Discover Red Rock Pass: The Site of a Cataclysmic Ancient Flood
Red Rock Pass is a fascinating geological wonder located at the north end of what was once ancient Lake Bonneville. Today, this two-mile-long narrow gap stands as a dramatic monument to the immense forces of nature.
- The Ancient Dam: The pass was once the shoreline of the Pleistocene Lake Bonneville, sitting 300 feet higher than the valley today. It was carved right through a tough sill of Paleozoic shale, limestone, and dolomite.
- The Cataclysmic Spark: Nearby lava flows shifted the course of the Bear River, pouring an immense amount of water into Lake Bonneville. This sudden influx caused the massive lake to overflow right here at Red Rock Pass.
- A Flood of Biblical Proportions: The resulting “Bonneville Flood” was truly catastrophic. At its peak, it discharged a staggering 15 million cubic feet per second—roughly three times the average flow of the Amazon River!
- Rushing Waters: Torrents of water roared through Marsh Creek Valley at speeds of 16 mph. While the peak flow lasted only a few days, massive volumes of water continued to tear through the gap for at least a year, eroding the pass down to its present level.
- A Geologist’s Paradise: Today, Red Rock Pass attracts geology enthusiasts and researchers from miles around who come to study the awe-inspiring remnants of this ancient event.
